🎧 What to Expect in the CELPIP Listening Test

The Listening Test has six parts, each with different types of conversations or talks. You’ll hear each audio only once, so it’s important to catch the main ideas and important details the first time.

✍️ Why Note-Taking Matters

Good note-taking helps you:

  • Stay focused while listening

  • Remember key facts like names, dates, and numbers

  • Organize your thoughts for answering questions

  • Avoid relying on memory alone

🛠️ Note-Taking Strategies That Work

1. Use Abbreviations and Symbols

Write quickly using short forms:

  • b/c = because

  • w/ = with

  • w/o = without

  • = leads to/result

  • # = number

Example:
Instead of writing “The manager will meet the team at 3:00 PM,” write:
Mgr mtg team @ 3pm

2. Focus on Keywords

Don’t try to write everything. Listen for:

  • Names

  • Dates and times

  • Places

  • Numbers

  • Opinions or decisions

3. Organize Your Notes

Use bullet points or a simple layout:

- John: late to meeting
- Reason: traffic
- Solution: reschedule to 4pm

4. Practice Active Listening

Train your ears to catch important info. Practice with:

  • Podcasts

  • News clips

  • CELPIP practice tests

Try pausing and summarizing what you heard in 1–2 bullet points.

5. Review Quickly Before Answering

After the audio ends, you’ll have a few seconds before the questions begin. Use that time to glance at your notes and get ready.

🧪 Practice Activity

Listen to a short English conversation (from YouTube or a CELPIP sample test). Try writing:

  • 3 key points

  • 1 important number or time

  • 1 opinion or decision

Then check your notes: Did you capture the main idea?

✅ Final Tips

  • Practice note-taking daily, even for just 5 minutes.

  • Don’t worry about spelling or grammar in your notes.

  • Keep your notes short, clear, and useful.
