CELPIP Tips: Speaking Part 8, Unusual Objects

The CELPIP Speaking Task 8Describing an Unusual Situation—can be one of the most unpredictable parts of the test. You're shown an image and asked to describe the situation by leaving a voicemail message. But what happens when the image is complex, unclear, or just plain confusing?

Don’t panic. Here are practical strategies to help you stay calm, sound confident, and score high—even when the image throws you off.

🎯 Understanding the Task

In Task 8, you’ll see a picture for 30 seconds and then have 60 seconds to speak. The goal is to describe the situation as if you're leaving a voicemail for a friend, co-worker, or family member.

🧠 Strategy 1: Focus on the Big Picture First

When the image is overwhelming:

  • Identify the setting: Is it a park, office, street, or home?

  • Spot the main action: What’s the most noticeable or unusual thing happening?

  • Ignore minor distractions: Don’t try to describe every detail—stick to 2–3 key elements.

🗣 Example:
"Hey Sarah, I just saw the strangest thing at the park. A man was walking his dog, but the dog was wearing sunglasses and sitting in a baby stroller!"

🧩 Strategy 2: Create a Logical Story

If the image doesn’t make sense, invent a story that connects the elements. The CELPIP test doesn’t penalize creativity—as long as your grammar, vocabulary, and fluency are strong.

Try using:

  • Cause and effect: “Maybe this happened because…”

  • Speculation: “It looks like they might be…”

  • Humor or surprise: “You won’t believe what I just saw…”

🧭 Strategy 3: Use a Simple Structure

When in doubt, follow this 3-part structure:

  1. Introduction – Who are you calling and why?

  2. Description – What’s happening in the image?

  3. Reaction – How do you feel or what will you do next?

🗣 Example:
"Hi Mom, I had to call you right away. I just saw a man trying to barbecue in the middle of a snowstorm. He had an umbrella over the grill and everything! I guess some people really love their burgers."

🛠 Strategy 4: Use Filler Phrases to Stay Fluent

If you need time to think, use natural-sounding fillers:

  • “Let me explain what I saw…”

  • “It’s kind of hard to describe, but…”

  • “What really caught my attention was…”

These help you avoid long pauses and keep your speech flowing.

🧘 Strategy 5: Stay Calm and Keep Talking

Even if you’re unsure:

  • Don’t stop speaking—fluency is key.

  • Avoid saying “I don’t know”—instead, describe what you think is happening.

  • Smile while speaking—it helps your tone sound more natural and confident.

✅ Final Tips

  • Practice with random images from Google or AI-generated scenes.

  • Record yourself and listen for clarity, tone, and pacing.

  • Use a timer to simulate test conditions.

Even the most confusing image can be turned into a great response with the right mindset and structure. Remember, CELPIP is testing your communication skills, not your detective abilities!
