Tell us about yourself
My name is Karla, and I’m from Mexico. I’ve been living in Vancouver for two years now. I’m a passionate graphic designer who loves dogs and cats—I truly believe pets are the best companions! I also enjoy chatting with people and learning about new cultures, foods, and languages.
How do you spend your free time in Vancouver?
Lately, I’ve been trying out new recipes from different countries, like Korean desserts. I also enjoy exploring different restaurants and meeting new people.
What is the best place in Vancouver to get food from your country?
One of my favorite restaurants is Oz Korean Cuisine. The food is delicious, and the staff is really kind and attentive. It’s also affordable, making it a great spot to go with friends and have a good time. It’s not a fancy place for a date, but it’s perfect for a fun and relaxed outing.
What challenges have you faced moving to Canada?
Moving to Canada has come with its challenges. First, the language barrier was tough—I'm a shy person, so expressing myself in English was difficult at first. Second, finding a job as a graphic designer has been challenging. While I’ve had some exciting temporary jobs, I’m still looking for a full-time position in my field. That said, I’ve gained valuable experience in other types of jobs, especially in customer service, which I never expected to enjoy but ended up liking a lot!
What are you hoping to achieve during your time at MOSAIC?
I hope to gain a better understanding of the CELPIP exam, especially when it comes to speaking. This is my biggest challenge, so I want to practice a lot and build my confidence. I’d also like to improve my reading skills so I can perform my best on the test.
