Community Profile: Sergio

This week’s Community Profile features a beloved member of our student community who has been with us since 2022. Sergio has taken Advanced English and IELTS Prep classes with MOSAIC engage, and he talked with us this week about his experiences and life in Canada.

Tell me a bit about yourself

My name is Sergio, a 31-year-old Ukrainian who embarked on a new chapter in life by moving to Canada just six months ago. Professionally, I thrive in the realm of software development, specializing in crafting captivating mobile applications for Android devices. Presently, I am fortunate enough to lend my expertise to a renowned global medical technology company, where I actively contribute towards endeavors that have the potential to positively impact and even save lives. Beyond my professional pursuits, I find solace and joy in exploring the great outdoors through invigorating hikes, while also indulging in the wisdom and knowledge shared within captivating podcasts during my leisurely moments.

What did you do back in your home country?

Ah, in my homeland, I was also a software developer. I loved inventing things and making user experiences better. Let me tell you a little story. About six years ago, when I was learning Italian, I realized there wasn't an app to practice Italian conjunctions. So, my friend and I decided to create one ourselves. Today, we have over 12,000 people from around the world enjoying our app. It feels great to know we're helping others learn and have fun at the same time.

How are you enjoying classes at MOSAIC engage

The MOSAIC classes have truly captured my heart with their remarkable sense of community. The camaraderie among fellow students and teachers is simply delightful. The name itself, MOSAIC, perfectly encapsulates the essence of this organization. It offers a vibrant tapestry of cultural diversity, where one can revel in the joy of unraveling the intricacies of different cultures. Amidst the lighthearted ambiance, one can effortlessly enhance their English proficiency, particularly in the realm of communication, all while being immersed in a tapestry of humor and amusement.

What is your favourite spot in Vancouver?

Choosing a singular favorite spot is quite a challenge for me. However, I must confess my fondness lies with the majestic mountains that grace the landscape of Vancouver. The city's advantageous geographical setting makes embarking on exhilarating hiking adventures an absolute breeze. If you possess an insatiable passion for exploration, it's not uncommon to set off on a Friday evening and return on a Sunday evening, brimming with unforgettable memories. A crucial element for such escapades is, undoubtedly, an abundance of delectable sustenance and the company of kindred spirits. Rest assured, this remarkable rendezvous with nature is an experience you'll cherish without a shred of doubt.

What are your plans for summer leisure activities?

Honestly, my summer itinerary is quite modest. As a newcomer, there are still many tasks on my plate, so I can't afford to be too carefree. Nevertheless, my idea of fun primarily revolves around enriching my English language skills. Additionally, I intend to immerse myself in the exhilarating pursuit of hiking. It's the perfect blend of an active retreat and quality time with friends. It's worth mentioning, though, that securing reservations for highly sought-after destinations, such as the awe-inspiring Garibaldi Lake, can prove to be quite a challenge.
