IELTS Tips: Double Question Essays

The double question essay is a common format in IELTS Writing Task 2. Unlike opinion or discussion essays, this type presents two distinct questions that must both be addressed clearly and thoroughly. Today’s Test Tips blog will help you prepare for this type of essay with language to use and structural tips for your writing.

🧩 Structuring Your Essay

Here’s a simple structure to follow:

  1. Introduction

    • Paraphrase the topic.

    • Briefly mention both questions.

  2. Body Paragraph 1

    • Answer the subjective question.

    • Support with examples or personal insight.

  3. Body Paragraph 2

    • Answer the objective question.

    • Provide analysis, solutions, or factual support.

  4. Conclusion

    • Summarize both answers.

    • Reinforce your main points.

🗣️ Final Tips

  • Answer both questions equally. Don’t neglect one.

  • Use clear topic sentences to signal which question you're addressing.

  • Avoid repetition—each paragraph should focus on a distinct idea.

  • Stay within 250–280 words for clarity and conciseness.
