Language of the Day: Hot Weather

Given the recent heat wave, today’s language of the day is all about describing hot temperatures!

How many ways can you think of to say that it’s hot?

Seeing as we’re in for a few months of warm weather, it’s a good idea to expand your vocabulary and get ready for the different ways of describing the heat.

  1. It’s hot!
The basic vocabulary I’m sure you all know.

  2. It’s scorching
When “it’s hot” just doesn’t feel strong enough, you can use higher level vocabulary like this to strengthen your point. “Scorching” is a nice neutral word that can be both good and bad, depending on the way you use it.

  3. It’s sweltering
This one is entirely negative. When you are hot and uncomfortable, you can use this description.

  4. I’m boiling
This one is more useful for describing yourself rather than the weather.

  5. I’m burning up
You know English speakers love to use phrasal verbs, right? This one is perfect for a hot day at the beach when you need to take a dip in the ocean to cool down.

  6. It’s like an oven
Sometimes we use idioms to get our point across, and this one uses a comparison to describe the weather.

Hopefully you’ve learned a new word or two, and now you’re ready to get out there and enjoy the heat. Remember to stay hydrated everyone!
