Language of the Day: The Definition of Spring

Spring has sprung! …But Spring is not only a season. It is a also verb and noun with multiple meanings! Let’s look at some definitions and examples 🌼


The verb form of spring has two main definitions:

  1. to move or jump suddenly or rapidly upward or forward.

For example, "I sprang out of bed" and "With a sudden spring, he leapt onto the table."

2. originate or arise from.

For example, “More tech companies sprang up in the 1990’s” and "Tears sprang from his eyes."


 Now we’ll look at three definitions for the noun form of the word spring:

  1. the season after winter and before summer, in which vegetation begins to appear, in the northern hemisphere from March to May and in the southern hemisphere from September to November.

For example, “In 2025, March 20th was the first official day of Spring.”


2. a resilient device, typically a helical metal coil, that can be pressed or pulled but returns to its former shape when released, used mainly to exert constant tension or absorb movement.

For example, "The mattress has lost its spring" and “I need to buy a new couch because I can feel the springs in the cushion.”

3. a place where water or oil wells up from an underground source, or the basin or flow formed in such a way.

For example, “I travelled to Japan and saw a lot of natural hot springs.”
