Language of the Day: Watching Movies

Although a lot of people prefer to watch movies in the comfort of their own homes, certain types of films like action movies are best experienced on the big screen.

Either way, watching movies will always be a popular hobby for most people. Here are some common words and phrases about movies and films.

Genre: type or category of movie

“When I was younger, my favourite movie genre was horror, but now I enjoy watching comedies and documentaries. What genres do you like?”

The Theatre: (*some people also call it “the cinema”)

“I checked the showtimes for The Barbie Movie at the theatre near my house. There are still some seats left and luckily, we can get tickets online.”

“I know you wanted to watch the movie at home, but let’s go to the theatre this time. I haven’t had movie theatre popcorn in ages!”

These days, the quality of television series has improved so much that they are often just as good as movies.

Even though many people don’t watch television series on an actual television set anymore, we still call them TV shows, or simply shows.

“I finally got caught up on that new show you recommended. I can’t wait for next week’s episode! Usually, I just wait to stream the whole series when it’s available on Netflix, but this show is so suspenseful. Let me know if there are any other good shows you’ve been watching recently.”
