Language of the Day: What's Your Sign?
A lot of cultures use zodiac systems and different kinds of classification systems to assign traits and characteristics to people. Whether you believe in astrology or engage with it for fun, it’s a fascinating topic to learn about!
Most of us know what our astrological sign is based on our birthdate and may even read our horoscope for fun or because we believe it can predict our future or provide some guidance.
Astrology uses the calendar to combine elements of science such as the position of the stars and the planets with symbolism or spiritual belief systems. The symbolic aspect of astrology assigns personality traits and characteristics to each zodiac sign.
Now it’s Capricorn season! If you were born between December 21st and January 20th, that makes you a Capricorn. The symbol of Capricorn is a mountain goat and Capricorns are known to be hard-working and determined. This sign is also connected with the Earth element which represents the physical realm, career, health, and the home.
The Chinese zodiac and Eastern medicine in general also consider the elements (earth, air, fire, water, etc). Like astrology there are 12 symbols, but each year is represented by a different animal. 2024 was the Year of the Dragon and interestingly MOSAIC was founded in 1976 which was also the Year of the Dragon!
2025 will be the Year of the Snake and it will be celebrated during Lunar New Year. This year Lunar New Year will be on January 29th which is the first new moon of the year. The snake represents transformation and renewal because of how snakes shed their skin. Even if you weren’t born in the Year of the Snake, we can all take some inspiration to shed old habits and beliefs!
Some cultures in Eastern Asia also believe that a person’s blood type defines their personality! This is used for predicting one’s future and compatibility which is considered when someone is looking for a romantic partner or career. Some people even consult with fortune tellers or astrologers to provide an in depth readings of their personality and destiny.
Numerology is another ancient mystical belief that creates meaning in numbers and combination of numbers. The idea of birthstones assigns a gemstone or crystal to every month. What are some other symbolic classification systems from other cultures?!
