CELPIP Tips: Speaking Task 5 – Comparing and Persuading
Today we’ll look at the next task in the CELPIP Speaking test which require test-takers to compare different images and information and then you’ll use your persuasion skills to make a convincing case!
You may have noticed by now that each Speaking task is slightly more challenging than the previous one. Unlike the first four tasks which allow for 30 seconds of preparation time, Task 5 provides more preparation time in addition to some other steps which we’ll look at in more detail below.
Speaking Task 5 is made up of THREE parts:
1. Choose an option - 60 seconds
2. Preparation time - 60 seconds
3. Speaking - 60 seconds
1. Choose an option - 60 seconds
You will be presented with two pictures including some written information, and you’ll have 60 seconds to select one of the pictures. Choose the one that you prefer and will be able to talk about in more detail. It’s a good idea to choose a picture as soon as possible so that you’ll be able to use this time to prepare your response.
Let’s look at an example:
First, read the prompt carefully so that you understand the scenario. In this case, your family is moving and you’ll have to convince a family member that your choice is better.
Glance at the information under each picture and choose the one that you feel has more advantages. For example, you may prefer that that the house on the left is more affordable or you may prefer that the house on the right has more bathrooms.
2. Preparation time - 60 seconds
The next part presents your choice along with ‘your family’s choice’ and gives you 60 more seconds to prepare your answer. Compare the photos and information for each house while focusing on identifying the strong points for your choice.
3. Speaking - 60 seconds
After the first two parts of comparing, choosing, and preparing, you will be given 60 seconds to speak! Again, read the instructions clearly which is this example states, “Your family is suggesting another house. Persuade your family member that what you chose is more suitable by comparing the two.”
Therefore, you will not only be highlighting the strong points of your choice, but you must do so in comparison to the other choice.
Because you have to convince a family member, you could also create a character that you will act as in relation to your family member. In this example, I’ll be a college student trying to convince my Dad.
“Hi Dad, I know you are considering buying that little red house in the country, and although it’s more affordable, I really believe we’ll be happier in the new downtown townhouse.
First of all, the townhouse is 1850 square feet which is almost double the size of the detached house. And the townhouse has three bedrooms instead of two, so Sam and I won’t have to share a bedroom anymore. We could also use the third bedroom as a guest room or games room in the future.
Also, if we move to the detached house, it would take me over an hour to commute to college, but if we lived in the townhouse, it would only be a 20-minute bus ride. Plus, the townhouse is closer to shopping malls and restaurants so we’ll all save time.
Another thing is that the detached house is older so there could be some potential issues and we might have to spend money on renovations and repairs. On the other hand, the townhouses were just built, so we’ll have all new appliances and up-to-date interiors. Both houses only have one bathroom, but the one in the townhouse is def8initely nicer!
We’ve never lived in a brand new house, and for just $40,000 dollars more, we will save on transportation fees and gas. In addition to the more convenient location, we’ll also benefit from all of the extra space which means we’ll have a bigger kitchen and living room to enjoy family time together.”
