Tell me about yourself?
My name is Blanca, I am from Mexico. I have been living in Vancouver for the past 5 years. I have a small cleaning business with a friend, which we have maintained for 4 years. I enjoy my work because it has given me the opportunity to meet people from a more human, personal, and sincere perspective.
How do you spend your free time in Vancouver?
I could say that I am passionate about reading, so I spend most of my time doing it. I also enjoy cooking since it is very difficult to find food with the true flavor of Mexico, so I try to keep traditional Mexican dishes on my menu. Sometimes, I go out with friends to the bowling or to watch a movie at the cinema.
What are some challenges you have faced with moving to Canada?
It has been quite difficult for me to fit into the culture. I come from a big and very sociable family, where we enjoy talking, sharing, and spending time together. Although most people in Vancouver are kind, it is hard to become part of their social circles. It has also been challenging to learn the language, which is the main barrier to interacting with others.
Which place would you recommend to someone visiting your country?
There are beautiful places in Mexico that are not touristy and you should visit. The city where I come from is called Tampico, Tamaulipas, and is located on the Gulf of Mexico. It has a large and beautiful beach, and it’s easy to get there because there is an airport. There, you will find the best variety of traditional food and, above all, any seafood you want, completely fresh.
What are you hoping to achieve during your time at MOSAIC?
I have enjoyed my time at MOSAIC and hope to continue doing so. It is easy to learn when you don’t feel the stress of having to take classes. I hope to improve my English in all areas and soon take an exam to validate everything I have learned.
