Community Profile: Edgar
We’re excited to introduce you to Edgar, one of our ESL students at MOSAIC Engage!
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm a retired chemical engineer from Colombia. I'm a person who likes adventure, I love exploring new places, reading, watching movies, and trying cuisines from around the world.
How do you spend your free time in Vancouver?
In my spare time, I like to go to the community centre in my neighbourhood. I spend time at the library, work out at the gym, and relax at the pool and sauna. On the weekends, I usually go with my daughter and her family to nearby places of interest, like local lakes, mountain trails, and in the summer, the beach we like going to Spanish Banks.
What are some of the challenges you’ve faced moving to Canada?
Some of the biggest challenges I've faced since moving to Canada have been the language barrier and adjusting from a tropical climate to a country with four different seasons. It's a drastic change in terms of weather, clothing, food, and daily routines. Adapting to a multicultural society which has many advantages but is very different from what I was used to, has also been an adjustment. And of course, leaving part of my family and friends behind to start a new life here hasn't been easy.
What place would you recommend to someone visiting Canada for the first time?
For anyone visiting Canada for the first time, I highly recommend Vancouver. It has the mildest fall and winter in the country, and it's the perfect mix of beaches, forests, and mountains. There's always so much to do here, especially in the summer.
