Please tell us about yourself and what you do at MOSAIC.

I’m Jean, and I used to be a teacher at MOSAIC Engage. During my very enjoyable time there, I taught beginners as well as the IELTS preparation course. It was a wonderful experience to meet and help students at various levels. Now I’m working for another MOSAIC program called Head Start English. This program offers English classes and services for people who are waiting to get into LINC. Look us up if that sounds like what you’re looking for!

What are some of your favourite places to visit in and around Vancouver?

I’m not much of an outdoors person, but I do enjoy short hikes around Lynn Canyon every once in a while. It’s a nice spot to escape the city, especially for a homebody like me.

Tell us about one of the best places you’ve travelled to and where would you like to go next.

I took a road trip around Scotland many years ago and I’ve been dreaming of revisiting ever since. Whether you’re into hiking, sightseeing, or exploring history and culture, there’s something for everyone.

What advice do you have for students who are new to learning English?

When learning a new word or phrase, take some time to think about a situation where you’d use it. Imagine the entire scenario—whether it’s a casual conversation or in a work email; who you’re communicating with; what topics you’re discussing; and how the new word or phrase fits into a sentence. More importantly, practice by saying the sentence out loud or writing it down. This way, when the imaginary becomes real, you’ll be more prepared to use the new vocabulary and make it your own.
