Community Profile: Penelope

Please welcome Penelope! one of our wonderful students in the afternoon ESL program at MOSAIC Engage.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Penelope. I am Cuban and I have been living in Vancouver for the past three years.

How do you spend your free time in Vancouver?

I enjoy staying active and taking part in activities at community centres and going to the gym. When the weather is nice, I love biking and taking long walks along the Vancouver Seawall. I’m always excited to join dance events around the city, especially Salsa and Bachata nights. On quieter days, I enjoy spending a relaxing afternoon reading at the Vancouver Public Library.

What are some of the challenges you’ve faced moving to Canada?

Since moving to Canada, I’ve faced a few challenges. The difference in technology compared to my home country was something I had to get used to. Being away from my family and friends has also been difficult, and I’m still building new relationships and learning to adjust to cultural differences. The climate was also a big adjustment, especially during winter.

What place would you recommend to someone visiting Canada for the first time?

I would recommend visiting Deep Cove in North Vancouver. It’s a beautiful spot that offers stunning ocean views, mountains, and a real sense of the natural beauty that makes Canada so special.
