This week, meet Xanat, one of the Program Support Workers here at MOSAIC Engage!

Please tell us about yourself and what you do at MOSAIC.

Hi there! My name is Xanat, and I’m originally from Mexico. I’ve been living in Canada for over 10 years now, and one of the things that I enjoy most is travelling to new and exciting destinations. I try to visit a new country from my bucket list at least once a year!

I’ve recently started working as a Program Support Worker for M.O.S.A.I.C Engage, and one of my favorite parts of the role is getting to connect with people from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures.

What are some of your favourite places to visit in and around Vancouver?

My favorite spot in Vancouver has to be Stanley Park! Biking through it or just taking a walk on a sunny day brings back memories of those early days in Canada.

Another awesome place to visit is Lynn Canyon in North Vancouver. It’s a great place to get outside, go for a walk with friends or family, and get away from the city for a bit, a perfect way to spend a Saturday morning!

Tell us about one of the best places you’ve travelled to and where would you like to go next.

I’ve had the opportunity to visit Paris, and of course, the City of Light did not disappoint! Its museums, architecture, and nightlife were incredible.

I also had the chance to visit the Forbidden City in Beijing, which was an amazing experience. Learning about the culture, mysticism, and history behind it made it truly unforgettable, full of vibrant colours, delicious food, and memorable sightseeing. Totally a must!

Next on my bucket list is Brazil during Carnaval season!

What advice do you have for students who are new to learning English?

Don’t give up!

Learning a new language can feel stressful and sometimes overwhelming, but being immersed in the culture and the city makes it so much more fun and enjoyable.

Try making friends from different nationalities, or joining conversation clubs!

Even joining a recreational soccer team, or using apps to meet new people, these can really help when you’re learning a new language!

Remember, we’ve all been there! Those first days when it feels like you don’t understand a word. But with time and persistence, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you start to feel more comfortable communicating in a second language!
