Language of the Day: 8 Parts of Speech

‘Parts of speech’ refer to a word’s role in a sentence. Can you guess what the 8 parts of speech are?!

Parts of speech are the categories into which words are classified based on their functions in a sentence. They are the fundamental building blocks of grammar, grouping words into categories based on their roles and how they function within a sentence.

These categories help us understand how words relate to each other and contribute to the overall meaning of a sentence.

If I ask the question, “What are the 8 parts of speech?” most of you might say, “subject, verb, object” because we are taught that these are the basic parts of a sentence. If I told you that you’re right about verbs being one part of speech, you might add, “nouns and adjectives?” and you would be on the right track!

Here are the 8 parts of speech. The eighth one is a bit of a surprise. Wow!

  1. Noun: refers to people, places, things, or ideas

  2. Pronoun: takes the place of a noun

  3. Adjective: describes or modifies a noun or pronoun

  4. Verb: describes an action, occurrence, or state of being

  5. Adverb: describes or modifies an adjective, a verb, another adverb, or a whole sentence

  6. Preposition: shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence

  7. Conjunction: connects different parts of a sentence to express multiple ideas

  8. Interjection: expresses emotion, gives commands, or serves as a greeting, usually standing alone in a sentence. For example, “Oh my god!” “Yes!” “Let’s go!” “Awesome!” “Hello!”
