Language of the Day: Connectors

Connectors, also called linking words or transition words, are a valuable tool. They’re one of the easiest ways to improve your writing by enhancing flow, coherence, and meaning.

Have you ever felt that your writing sounds confusing? That’s because writing isn’t just about grammar—it’s also about flow, or how your ideas connect and move smoothly. And that’s where connectors can help.

Let’s see an example

Without connectors:

I wanted to go outside. It was raining. I stayed home.

With connectors:

I wanted to go outside, but it was raining, so I stayed home.

👉 Same ideas, but much clearer and more natural in the second example.

What are connectors?

Connectors are words or phrases that link ideas together so your writing feels smooth instead of disconnected. They:

  • Create logical relationships between ideas

  • Guide the reader through your thinking

  • Add context, contrast, cause, and emphasis

We can divide connectors in different categories. For instance:

⚖️ Contrasting ideas

Connectors:

  • but, however, although, though, on the other hand, yet

Example:

I wanted to go, but I was too tired.

The project was well planned. However, we faced some unexpected delays.

Adding ideas

Connectors:

  • and, also, furthermore, moreover, in addition, besides

Example:

I enjoy writing, and I practice every day.
I also read a lot to improve my skills.

🔍 Giving reasons

Connectors:

  • because, since, as, due to, because of

Example:

I stayed home because I was sick.
Since I wasn’t feeling well, I decided to rest.

🎯 Showing results

Connectors:

  • so, therefore, as a result, consequently, that’s why

Example:

It was raining, so we canceled the trip.
As a result, we stayed indoors.

⏱️ Sequencing or time

Connectors:

  • first, then, next, after that, finally, meanwhile

Example:

First, I brainstorm ideas. Then, I start writing.
Finally, I review my work.

Extra tips

✅ Tip 1: Don’t overuse connectors

Too many connectors can make your writing feel heavy or repetitive.

✅ Tip 2: Choose the right connector

Keep in mind that the wrong connector can change the whole meaning of a sentence.
Each connector shows a different relationship between ideas (contrast, result, reason, etc.), so choosing the right one is important for clarity.

✅ Tip 3: Read your writing out loud

If it sounds choppy, you probably need connectors.
