Language of the Day: Deal

Today we’ll look at the various definitions of the word ‘deal’ along with example sentences and proper usage.


  1. to deal (verb), to deal with (phrasal verb): to do something about a person or thing that causes a problem or difficult situation.

    -synonyms: handle, manage, endure, cope with

    -the verb and phrasal verb meaning of “deal” can be used to express a range of situations from minor or common things like dealing with rush hour traffic to more serious situations like dealing with an illness.

Let’s look at some example sentences!

  • “I have to call the building manager because I can’t deal with my noisy neighbours anymore!”

  • “Daily meditation and breathing exercises have really helped me deal with stress.”

  • “The manager dealt with customer complaints in a calm and understanding manner.”

  • “She has been dealing with recurring back pain since the car accident last year.”


2. deal (noun): an agreement entered into by two or more parties for their mutual benefit

-we’ll look at the difference between make a deal / have a deal and get a deal. Making a deal means to make an agreement that both sides benefit from and getting a deal focuses more the benefit that ones receives. The example sentences below will provide more clarity.

  • “My roommate and I have a deal that whenever one of us cooks, the other one does the dishes.”

  • “We have been in the process of making a deal with the investors for over a month.”

  • “I went shopping for some new clothes and got a great deal! For every two items I bought, I got one for free!
