Language of the Day: Hand Related Sayings

Today we’ll look at a handful of idioms, phrasal verbs, and saying that are all related to hands! 👋


 

Handful: 1. a small quantity, 2. a person who is very difficult to deal with or control

  • “Due to the rainstorm, we only had a handful of customers today.”

  • “Billy is such a handful that we had to ask his mom to stay for soccer practice because he keeps picking fights with the other kids on the team.”

Firsthand: to experience something yourself

  • “My grandfather was a young man during the war so he has a lot of firsthand stories from that time.”

Out of hand: to get out of control

  • “The customers got out of hand during the Black Friday sale last year, so this year we hired extra staff to help out.”

Hands down: unquestionably, without a doubt

  • “The original movie was hands down better than the re-make.”

Hands tied: not having the ability to help or take action

  • “Sorry, my hands are tied because the policy states that we can’t make any exceptions.”

In good hands: being looked after by an important person or organization

  • “My best friend is taking care of my dog while I’m out of town, so I know he’s in good hands.”

Hand in hand: two people or things that are closely related or connected

  • “Sometimes it feels like work and stress go hand in hand.”
