Language of the Day: Modern Slang

Today we’ll look at some current slang words that are used in popular culture and during everyday conversation among youth, but slangs words are constantly changing and there’s a chance that some of these slang words will feel outdated by the time you read this blog post!


Every culture and generation is defined by its use of slang words and phrases. Although some slang words like “cool” have been persisted throughout the last few generations, other slang words like “groovy” have become outdated, and there are a few slang words that have even made a comeback!

Here are some commonly used slang words along with definitions and examples!


  • GOAT is an acronym that stands for ‘greatest of all time’. “There are a lot of talented basketball players but Michael Jordon is the goat.”

  • Cap which means ‘lying’ (while ‘no cap’ means that you’re telling the truth) originated from African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and hip-hop culture which has defined popular culture, fashion, and slang for generations. “Even though this sushi wasn’t that expensive, it was no cap the best seafood that I’ve ever eaten!”

  • Glow up is when someone undergoes a significant transformation and improvement. “You’ll be surprised when you see her glow up! She has become so confident since she started going to the gym.”

  • Fire is used to refer to something that is awesome, cool or impressive. Slang words are often words that already exist but with a different meaning! “We had so much fun at the concert. It was fire!”

  • Ghosted is when someone ignores you or doesn’t respond to your texts or messages. “I think my friend is mad that I didn’t invite her to the concert because she has been ghosting me all week.”

  • L or W refers to a loss or a win. For example, “I was so upset that I failed the test but then I decided to take the L as a learning opportunity to study harder so that I can get a W next time.”

  • Fam is short for family and refers to your inner circle. This slang word along with the next two are shortened versions of an existing word and hold the same or similar meaning. “Thanks for the amazing gift, fam! Now we have matching t-shirts!”

  • Rizz is short for charisma which is someone’s ability to charm or attract others. “I don’t think he’s a super talented singer but he makes up for it with his rizz and his stage presence.”

  • Sus is short for suspicious and refers to someone or something that seems untrustworthy or questionable. “I got a call from someone who apparently works at the bank but it seemed kind of sus so I didn’t share my personal information.”
