Language of the Day: Retreat

Today we’ll look at the word “retreat” and how it relates to the idea of taking a break from our regular routines in order to rest, recharge, and re-connect with ourselves!


Around this time of year, many of us start to feel tired after all the long summer days. It is also a time of transition as the weather starts to cool down and people are getting ready to go back to school or work.

Some of us may feel inclined to retreat from all of the activities and socializing, and may prefer to spend some quiet time in nature or at an actual retreat!


Let’s look at some definitions!

Retreat (verb) : move back or withdraw

  • “My dogs tend to retreat to the shady area under the trees on hot summer days.”

  • “The soldiers retreated back to camp after the storm started.”

Retreat (noun) : a quiet or secluded place or period in which one can rest and relax.

  • “I just signed up for a one-week yoga retreat up in the mountains!”

  • “I love going to Stanley Park during my lunchbreak. It’s a much-needed retreat from the chaos and noise of downtown.”

  • “We are going on our annual end-of-year retreat where we can reflect on the past year and set goals for the new year.
