Language of the Day: Stat

Welcome back! How was your long weekend? I hope you enjoyed the weather and did something fun.

You might have heard a few different names for this long weekend we just had. In British Columbia, it’s called Victoria Day (because May 24th was Queen Victoria’s birthday), but we also call it MayLong or the May Long Weekend.

But Victoria Day is just one of many “statutory holidays” or “stats” that we have throughout the year in Canada.

Others include Remembrance Day in November, BC Day in August, and Family Day in February. The names and number of stat holidays are different in each province, but in BC we have 11.

Around these long weekends, you might hear Canadians use word “stat”. Here are a few examples:

“Is Friday a stat?”
“Of course, it’s Labour Day!”

“Are you working on the stat?”
”Yeah, but at least I get time and a half!”

PS, Did you know you get paid 1.5x your wage for working on a stat? The next stat will be Canada Day on July 1st 🇨🇦 I’m already looking forward to it!
