Meet Isabel who is a regular participant in our weekly free conversation group. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences and positive energy with us!

Tell us about yourself.

I was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, and have lived in Canada since 2022. I also lived in Chile for 7 years, where I adopted my two cats, who flew with me from Santiago to Vancouver. One of my guilty pleasures is watching kid's movies while eating popcorn on my sofa around my cats!

How do you spend your free time in Vancouver?

In summertime, I love going to the beach and sitting there just watching the waves; It makes me feel relaxed and connected to myself. If it's a rainy or cold day, I prefer to stay at home, but no matter what, I'll go out for a Spanish latte on Saturdays or Sundays!

What are some challenges you’ve faced with moving to Canada?

One of the biggest challenges I faced when moving here was losing my fear of speaking in English. I feared making mistakes and thought no one would understand my pronunciation. Learning more technical communication skills for work hasn't been easy, but I'm doing better... It just takes time!

Which place would you recommend to someone visiting your country?

Venezuela has amazing places to visit, like Angel Falls, the world's tallest uninterrupted waterfall, and Morrocoy National Park. If you plan to visit Maracaibo, the best month is November, when we have 'La feria de la Chinita'; you can visit 'La Chiquinquira Church' and be part of the local festivity!

What are you hoping to achieve during your time at MOSAIC?

Joining MOSAIC has been great. I've had the chance to meet wonderful people and practice my speaking in the weekly conversation group. I hope MOSAIC helps me to get my English to the next level!
