Tell us about yourself.
I am originally from Bordeaux, France. My sister lives in Vancouver, and after visiting her three years ago, I fell in love with the city. I moved here five months ago and currently work as a social worker in a French-speaking community centre.
How do you spend your free time in Vancouver?
I love exploring the city and its surroundings, and I’m passionate about animals. This summer, I hoped to see orcas, and after many unsuccessful attempts, I treated myself to an organized tour. At the moment, there are many migratory birds around Vancouver, and I’d like to remind everyone that if we love animals, we should not disturb or touch them.
What are some challenges you’ve faced with moving to Canada?
Moving here has been challenging, especially at the beginning when you are far from your loved ones. The significant time difference with France can make it difficult to find the right moment for phone calls. Another challenge has been taking the time to understand Canadian culture, including small-talk topics, schedules, and daily habits, in order to integrate as quickly and comfortably as possible.
Which place would you recommend to someone visiting your country?
It’s hard to choose, but for those who enjoy city life, Paris and Bordeaux are great options. Bordeaux also offers easy access to the ocean and vineyards, creating a perfect balance. If you prefer the mountains, the Alps are a must-see, with a special mention to the Cirque de Gavarnie, which is, in my opinion, the most beautiful natural place in France.
What are you hoping to achieve during your time at MOSAIC?
My goal is to better understand grammatical rules so I can feel more comfortable speaking and writing. I have a traveller’s level of English, but my current level does not allow me to work in English or to communicate clearly with native speakers.
