Language of the Day: Acronyms
Today our language of the day is acronyms. Acronyms are a way of making simple, short words out of longer phrases. Basically, we take the first letter of each word in a series and string them together into a new word.
Sometimes we say the whole word. For example, as soon as possible becomes ASAP and we pronounce it “aye-sapp”.
Other times, we say each letter instead. For example, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are called the RCMP and we pronounce each letter (arr-see-em-pee)
Acronyms are especially common online and in text messages. Let’s check out a list of common acronyms that people use nowadays.
