Language of the Day: Getting Your Driver's Licence

Today we’ll look at common words and phrases that are used in the process of learning how to become a new driver in Vancouver!

Our MOSAIC Engage centre is located just 2 blocks away from one of Vancouver’s ICBC Licensing offices which is where BC residents go to obtain driver’s licences.

The first step to getting your driver’s licence is taking your knowledge test which is a computer-based and tests your knowledge on driving rules and regulations such as identifying traffic signs and hazards.

You’ll need to get 40 out of the 50 multiple-choice questions right in order to pass, and you must be a minimum of 16 years old.

Once you pass the knowledge test, you’ll get your Learner’s licence which allows you to get into the driver’s seat to learn and practice with a licensed driver sitting in the passenger seat beside you.

You may have noticed cars in and around Vancouver with a red ‘L’ sticker on them which designates that they driver is in the learning process. Driving school and lessons are optional.

After learning for one year, Learners’ can book a road test during which a certified examiner will be in the passenger seat and they will give the driver instructions while assessing their driving skills. A lot of Learners have to take the road test more than once but it is possible to pass the test the on your first try!

Once you pass the road test, you’ll be given an ‘N’ sign to put on the back of your car which stands for ‘novice’ or new driver.

Novice drivers can drive unsupervised and it is almost like having a full licence, however, there are a few restrictions. And Novice drivers have to book another road test a minimum of 2 years later after which they can obtain their full licence.

Another benefit of having a driver’s licence is that is provides a Government-issued Photo Identification. The ICBC office also gives residents the option of getting a BCID which is a legitimate photo ID that can be used for a number of official purposes. And, the ICBC office is also where residents go to get their BC Services Card which is available to people which is available to people who have a medical services plan in BC.
