Meet the Artists

Arefeh Norouzi

Country of origin
Iran

Medium of choice
Acrylic paints

Arefeh Norouzi is a self-taught artist whose practice is shaped by an intuitive dialogue with the canvas, where gravity and chemistry replace the traditional brushstroke, transforming painting into a unique form of visual alchemy. In her practice, she invites the paint to flow on canvas, creating portal to ethereal realms where microscopic patterns of nature echo the vastness of the cosmos. Having exhibited internationally, Norouzi speaks a universal language of rhythm and light, finding harmony in shared patterns and reflecting the beauty discovered in surrender through contemporary abstraction.

Juan Rivas

Country of origin
Colombia

Medium of choice
Acrylic paints

Juan Felipe Rivas is a Colombian artist, psychologist, and lawyer currently living in Vancouver, Canada. After being forced to leave Colombia because of violence, he found in painting a meaningful way to process loss, rebuild hope, and reconnect with himself. His work explores resilience, memory, migration, and the emotional landscapes shaped by displacement. Through color, texture, and symbolism, Juan Felipe transforms personal experiences into visual narratives that invite reflection, healing, and human connection. For him, art is more than creative expression—it is a path toward renewal and a bridge between cultures. His paintings reflect both the challenges and the strength that emerge from beginning again in a new country.

Antonio De Dios González

Country of origin
Mexico

Medium of choice
Photography

Born in Mexico in 1970, Antonio is a Mexican Indigenous artist whose photography explores identity, migration, and belonging. After spending more than a decade as a teacher, he arrived in Canada over seven years ago as an LGBTQ+ refugee, beginning a new chapter of his life. Photography became a way to document his journey, capturing moments of resilience, cultural connection, and everyday beauty. His images reflect the experience of rebuilding a sense of home while honoring his Indigenous heritage and lived experiences. Through his work, he invites viewers to reflect on identity, hope, and the transformative power of community.

Ray Hassoun

Country of origin
Syria

Medium of choice
Makeup

Ray Hassoun is a makeup artist whose work focuses on enhancing identity and self-expression through beauty. While living in Erbil, Iraq, he worked primarily with individuals from the LGBTQ+ community, offering makeup services that helped them express themselves in a safe and affirming way. For many of his clients, makeup was not only about appearance, but also about confidence, dignity, and feeling seen in a society where they often felt invisible or unsafe. Through his practice, he learned that makeup can be a powerful form of communication and resistance. Each face he worked on carried a personal story of identity, resilience, and belonging. His work became a space of trust where people could freely express who they are without judgment. In this exhibition, he presents the idea that beauty is deeply connected to identity and belonging. His experience working in this context has shaped his understanding of queerness and migration as shared human experiences of searching for safety, acceptance, and self-expression. This work reflects not only his technical skills as an artist, but also his commitment to creating spaces where identity can exist openly and with pride.

Ray has generously offered to host 30-minute, free, live makeup sessions across both days of the exhibition! If you’re interested in getting your makeup done by Ray, please sign up for a slot HERE

Musical Theatre: “Seniors Take On Things We Never Talk About”

  • Anvil Centre Theatre (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Back by popular demand that drew 1300+ audience members, the musical theatre production “Seniors Take on Things We Never Talk About” returns this July at the Anvil Theatre at Anvil Centre, New Westminster!

Through a unique blend of humour, music, and heartfelt storytelling, this production explores aging stereotypes, elder abuse, and the power of connection—challenging societal perceptions while celebrating the strength, resilience, and wisdom of seniors.

Celebrating MOSAIC’s 50th Anniversary: Together We Thrive

This musical theatre production is part of MOSAIC’s 50th Anniversary celebration, themed “Together We Thrive.” More than a performance, it reflects MOSAIC’s ongoing commitment to uplifting diverse voices and building inclusive communities.

By bringing immigrant seniors’ stories to the stage, this production highlights how shared experiences can spark understanding, connection, and meaningful change—one story, one audience member, and one conversation at a time.

Performance Dates:

Admission is FREE, but seats are limited! Register now to secure your spot!

In our musical theatre performance, you are invited to consider:

  • Have you ever felt lonely or isolated from your loved ones?

  • How do you feel about being treated as if you’re incapable of understanding?

  • What are your thoughts on seniors dating and finding love?

  • How do you cope with difficult realities?

These performances aim to amplify the voices, experiences, and wisdom of immigrant seniors. By addressing elder abuse, ageing stereotypes, and the importance of social connection, we hope to spark meaningful conversations and foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by our senior community in their ongoing journeys toward self-awareness, growth, meaning, and purpose.

Story Behind The Scenes Musical

This production is deeply rooted in a vision that extends beyond the stage. By amplifying the voices of immigrant seniors, we aim to foster awareness, empathy, and connection across communities.

Like a drop of water creating expanding circles, each story shared has the potential to create ripples of understanding and action. Every audience member, every conversation, and every connection contributes to a larger movement toward inclusion and belonging.

This work reflects MOSAIC’s belief that meaningful change often begins with one courageous voice being heard.

Newcomer Experience

While the stories begin with older adults, they also reflect the experiences of many newcomers to Canada—building a new life, overcoming isolation, navigating language barriers, finding belonging, and rediscovering purpose.

Returning Audiences

Returning audiences will discover new moments of reflection, humour, and inspiration as the production continues to evolve and grow alongside its performers.

To learn more about the inspiration behind this project and its connection to MOSAIC’s 50th Anniversary, read our blog post.

Shape Your Community Workshop
Feb
26
5:30 PM17:30

Shape Your Community Workshop

Women Transforming Cities (WTC) is a grassroots non-profit working to reshape cities and shift power so everyone can belong, participate, and experience social, economic, and political equity.

From public transit to housing to food security, city governments make decisions that affect our daily lives. As we look ahead to the 2026 local elections, join WTC for a 90-minute workshop to learn how local government works and how to engage with City Hall to shape decisions that better serve your community. This workshop is part of WTC’s Our City Hall Campaign, which amplifies underrepresented voices in Vancouver elections and turns community priorities into real council action. WTC listens to community needs, shapes them into clear policy priorities, secures candidate commitments during the 2026 election, and holds City Council accountable throughout their four-year term. By joining, you’ll help add your voice to these priorities.

Date & Time: Thursday, February 26th, 2026 | 5:30PM – 7:30 PM
Location: 5575 Boundary Road, Vancouver,  V5R 2P9
Register using this form.

Key learnings from this workshop include:
● Local government jurisdiction & city council’s role
● Identifying community priorities – what do we need to feel like we belong in our city?
● Ways to engage and shape local government decisions
